The Mother and Baby Unit
The MBU unit provides a place where housing and assistance is provided to sick HIV+ mothers and children allowing them to stay together as a family instead of being separated. The Home provides assistance to those living there by helping supply food, shelter, clothing and medical care.
The concept for the home was developed after many years operating the Agape Home and taking in the children of mothers who, because of their own health, were left with no other alternative but to surrender their children to an orphanage for care. Often these are women who have no other family to support them, or to take their children for them. In many of these cases, the mother and child do not want to be separated, but the reality of the mother’s health might otherwise require it in the absence of assistance.
During 2004, this service extended to the care of HIV+ women who do not have children, and secondly to allow for non-HIV+ children to live in with their mothers for a time provided that there is a family or orphanage placement available to them should the mother pass away.
